COMBO FITNESS AND PILATES
Combo Fitness, developed by Nancy Doherty, is a specialized combination of (a) Mat Pilates movements; (b)
physical training exercises and (c) yoga that strengthens and works out the entire body. Classes are tailored to the participants'
needs and abilities, allowing anyone in any shape to get a great whole body workout.
Pilates, taught either separately or as a part of Combo Fitness, is a specialized series of movements using
focused breathing patterns. Pilates improves the body's core strength. The Pilates Promise is: "You will feel better after
10 sessions. You will look better after 20 sessions, and you will
have a whole new body after 30 sessions".
Pilates yields numerous benefits. Increased lung capacity and circulation through deep, healthy breathing
is a primary focus. Strength and flexibility, particularly of the abdomen and back muscles, and coordination (both muscular and
mental) are key.
Posture, balance, and core strength increase. Bone density and joint health improve, and many experience
positive body awareness for the first time. Participants learn balance and control of the body.
Pilates has also been found useful in strengthening muscles in the pelvic floor and is beneficial to
those suffering from pelvic floor dysfunction or prostatodynia. Pilates exercises can help with the supportive functions
of the pelvic floor, keeping the internal organs in the correct place. If the pelvic floor is weak, the internal organs
can prolapse, or fall. Pilates is also useful for those suffering with incontinence. In addition, women who exercise their
pelvic floor muscles have reported enhanced sexual feelings.
Various pieces of equipment are used in our classes like balance balls, rollers, free weights and
bands. Every class is different, and clients say the exercises make them feel better, stronger, more in control and less
prone to injury, as opposed to visits to the gym which left them feeling wiped out.
